WRIT 1001H: How to Write an Argumentative Essay, A FREE Course for New College and University Students.

Course Description

Welcome to class!

Since you’re here, you’re probably enrolled in a college or university program which requires or may require you to write an argumentative essay. Don’t worry. I got you covered.

The philosophy behind this course relies upon the following beliefs:

  1. A student’s introduction to any subject could strongly influence their long-term approach and attitude towards that subject; therefore, a positive first encounter with creating an argumentative essay could be instrumental in long-term success.
  2. Writing an argumentative essay could be annoying and tedious; therefore, writing an argumentative essay should be productive, engaging and relevant to the student’s overall growth.
  3. An argumentative essay is a product which involves the process of planning, writing and revising. All are both accomplished if the student is working smarter and not harder.
  4. The process of planning, writing and revising an argumentative essay is not simply obvious, nor should it be assumed that it is common, everyday knowledge. Therefore, it takes practice, commitment and a few hacks to automatize the process.

This course is informed by ground-breaking, post-secondary foundational writing and research courses which have been taught by the instructor. This is the first half of a two-part course.

WRIT 1001 will expose you to the following concepts:

  1. Research question
  2. Thesis statement
  3. Thesis point
  4. Supporting detail
  5. Essay Outline

By the end of this course, you will create an outline for a 500-word argumentative essay. The point of this course is to swiftly and thoroughly learn how to plan, write and revise such an essay. So, let’s get to work.

See you in class!
