Course Description

This course is a sub part under chemical engineering and focuses on the techniques and processes related to petrochemical industry. The subject combines the basic concepts of chemistry, physics, mathematics and economics. The course covers the introduction to petrochemical industries, various petrochemical products and its manufacturing processes. The course provide an insight into modern logical design development mechanism and technologies for the easy processing of the products. In detail, the curriculum of this course covers the introduction to petrochemical, petrochemical industry in India, basic raw material for petrochemical synthesis and their sources, preparation of feedstock for petrochemical production, main building blocks of petrochemical industry, First generation raw material like olefins, aromatics, naphthenes, production of aromatics, naphthenes and other hydrocarbon feedstock, aromatic separation into B, T, X, Production of low molecular weight olefins by hydrocarbon cracking, separation techniques and purification, Combining olefins and aromatics to produce second generation intermediates such as glycols, amines, acids, ketones that can be used also as solvents and formulating agents. Also deals with the types of polymerization such as bulk, emulsion and suspension etc, the and manufacture of polymers like polyester, nylon, etc. The course also gives an idea about integration of refinery and petrochemical plants with power generation, pollution control – norms and methods of elimination, brief description on safety considerations.
