Incorporating Video Game Based Interventions, video game based interventions, occupational therapy practice.

Course Description

This course will showcase a capstone experience on the development of an online resource, called RX Gamebase, to support occupational therapy practitioners and health care professionals to therapeutically utilize video games in their practice. This capstone was created with guidance of Erik Johnson, the Chief Medical Officer of WarFighter Engaged and occupational therapist. A description of the development of this capstone will be provided starting with a needs assessment and a literature review to emphasize the therapeutic benefits of video games in occupational therapy practice. This course highlights the process of working on the RX Gamebase website to ensure that the information provided is evidence-based by adding resources. The course will also identify and overcome barriers to integrating video games into occupational therapy practices through the construction of an informational document. Lastly, the course will display the focal point of this capstone, the gaming database. This database lists and categorizes games based on genre, gaming device played on, and therapeutic function addressed so that practitioners tailor video game based treatment to their client goals and needs. It is the aim that the formation of these resources through this capstone experience will provide insight on the therapeutic benefits of video games in therapy and encourage practitioners to integrate it in their practice.
