What is creative writing?

Even if you are a beginner and have not written anything for a long time, an idea you jot down today could be the basis of a best-selling novel. There are no rules for creative writing, only guidelines. The main types of creative writing are:

How do you start?

There is no secret to success, other than that you have to start somewhere. I once spoke to an award winning author who told me that it was a hobby she did day and night. I did not believe her, until I started writing blogs and doing academic writing. Writing is a journey of discovery by trial and error. All you really need to do this is a pen and paper.

What are your chances of success?

Everyone can succeed at creative writing. This is a personal journey where you are the main audience. I have taught women in prison who had never written anything until I encouraged them to put their ideas down on paper. Success to them was just to make a start. There are many types of writing not just story-telling. Guide books, humour, how-to advice.

Poetry:

Poetry is one of the most expressive forms of creative writing and the easiest to do. You don’t even need to have read a lot of it to understand the basics.
