ClemsonLIFE Capstone Experience, Supporting Young Adults with IDD: Insights from the ClemsonLIFE Program.

Course Description

This course offers an inside look at my occupational therapy capstone experience, centered around supporting young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through the ClemsonLIFE program. Designed for OT students, educators, and professionals interested in inclusive postsecondary education, this presentation explores how occupational therapy can empower individuals with IDD as they transition into adulthood. Key themes include promoting independence, building functional life skills, and fostering meaningful community involvement. I reflect on my role as a Level II fieldwork student, highlight the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, and share outcomes related to self-determination, confidence, and overall quality of life. Topics covered include meal preparation, budgeting, social engagement, vocational readiness, and navigating daily routines within a supportive, inclusive environment. The course combines personal insight, research-based strategies, and practical tools to illustrate the OT process in action. Special focus is placed on client-centered care, rapport building, and advocating for dignity and respect in all interactions. Whether you’re preparing for fieldwork, exploring career options in transition services, or simply passionate about helping individuals with IDD thrive, this course offers a meaningful and informative experience. Join me as I walk through the challenges, successes, growth, and learning that shaped my time with ClemsonLIFE and helped define my professional identity as a future occupational therapist.
