Course Description

This class explores different Art Movements- Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Expressionism.  Each period has a lecture that explores the major themes and artists of each type of art.  Impressionism is an Art movement that originated in France as a reaction to the prevailing art of the day.  The artists painted Impressions of color and light in a sketchy manner.  Post- Impressionism is a movement with different artists like Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne and Seurat.  These artists had diverse styles that led into other Art Movements.  Fauvism is an art movement where artists used unrealistic colors.  Expressionism is an art movement where artists expressed their inner worlds, rather than paint an outer reality.  This course explores a period in Art History.  Some major Impressionist artists are Monet, Renoir, and Degas.  Some major Fauvist artists are Derain and Matisse.  Some major Expressionist artists are Munch, Nolde, and Kollwitz.  In taking this class, the student will get a brief introduction to different periods of Art History, Art Movements, and how they relate to each other.  These art movements and artists changed the course of Art History and the art of the future.  An art movement is when a group of artists join together and paint in a certain style, with a philosophy or belief system, and are sometimes rebelling against the art movements of the time.
